Great location, fantastic views, very nice large room, with lovely linen and comfy beds. Huge balcony with a great view overlooking a quiet street running down to the sea. Eli the host was brilliant, excellent English. Large kitchen area which is unusual, and a toastie machine which we found useful at lunch time.
Lesvos, with an area of 1632 square kilometers, is the third largest island in Greece and is about 190 nautical miles from Piraeus. The history of the island begins from 3,000 BC, according to historical findings that have come to light from time to time. At the end of these years, Lesvos was the birthplace of important personalities such as the famous poet Sappho, Pittakos, one of the seven sages of antiquity and the later Odysseas Elytis (poet) and Stratis Myrivilis (author).
Odysseus Elytis had written about Lesvos:
Petra is located at the northwest of Lesbos and comprises the villages Skoutaros, Stypsi, Lafionas, Ypsilometopo and the settlements Petri and Anaxos.
The region combines exceptional natural beauties: olive groves and forests with pines, oak-trees, cypress-trees as well as fruit-bearing trees, traditional stone built mountain villages with running waters and rich vegetation, but also seaside modern summer holiday settlements with sandy beaches and crystal waters.
Petra Lesvos is beginning to sprawl behind its broad, sandy beach and seafront square with a core of old stone houses, many with Levantine-style balconies overhanging the streets.
Petra takes its name from the giant monolith located some distance inland and capped by the eighteenth-century church of Panagia Glykofiloussa, reached via 114 rock-hewn steps on the northeast side. The town of Mithymna is approx. 6 km to the north.
